Everything to play for – is what all the teams were thinking before the start of the third day of the Austin Bangladeshi community soccer tournament 2022. Group B encounter between the Austin Fighters and Austin Bengal Tigers was no different as both the teams would secure a place in the semi-finals only if they win. Strategies were discussed and changes in game plans were made by both the team management which resulted in an action-packed thrilling match – much to the delight of the spectators and supporters. Austin Fighters came out to be the winner of this match by a margin of 3-1 and moved to the semi-final.
Both teams lost their previous respective matches and because of that, came with a changed gameplan. It’s not a surprise that both teams pushed towards strengthening their offense lineups along with attacking mid-fields. The first half started with attacks from the Austin Bengal Tigers who launched several long passes to their strikers from strong mid-fields operated by Istiaque, Moinul, and Faiyaz. During the first 10 minutes, this trio threatened to break the defense barrier of the Fighters led by Captain Sunny. However, their attacks were neutralized by the Fighters’ defenders, Ali, Sakif, Momin, and the evergreen Jewel. Tigers best chance during this time came when the veteran Shaheen could get a 1 on 1 situation with the keeper, Rubayat, who did well to stop the shot made from the D-box.
After the 10 minute break, Fighters started to push their mid-field to create more attacking options. Fighters’ trump card, Shams, generated a lot of pace from the left side to pass and sometimes dodge the defenders but the finishing was not happening because of the strong defending of the Tigers led by Captain Mona. Fighters got 2 opportunities to score during this time when both Sabiq and Wasi missed their targets. The first half ended in a goalless draw.
Both teams started the second half with more attacking options as Tigers captain Mona came forward to operate from the mid-field to make long shots within the D-box of the Fighters. However, this created counter-attack opportunities from the Fighters as well. In one of their attempts, Fighter’s Mukim created a great chance but his placing shot from inside the D-box hit the right side of the post. On the other side, Tiger’s created some good chances through their star players, Rizwan and Ayman. Finally, the break-through came after the 10 minute break of the 2nd half, when Fighter’s playmaker Shams ran through multiple defenders and made a cross within the D-box. Wasi made no mistake this time to put the ball on the left top corner of the post to make it 1-0. Fighter’s celebrations, however, could not last long though as Tigers counter attacked within 5 minutes and equalized through a brilliant through pass from Istiaque. Tiger’s prolific striker Rizwan controlled the ball well in the D-box and put it on the net to make it 1-1.
At this point, defenders from both the teams were pushing hard to get the match winning goal. Fighters’ defense wall created by Ali, Sakif, Jewel, and Momin tackled several counter-attacks by the opposition offense line formed by Moinul, Ayman, Rizwan, and Istiaque. Tigers also pushed their captain Mona almost to the attacking half. Tigers’ defenders – the young guns Sadi, Shahid and the experienced campaigners Mosi and Deeder were instrumental in neutralizing the attacks made by the Fighters. However, Fighters continued to attack using their offense line formed by Shams, Sabiq and Sid. In no time, Fighters found the winning goal – this time Sid, getting a cross from Shams, putting it to the net in the second attempt after getting a rebound from the keeper. Fighters went ahead by 2-1.
While Tigers went all in to get an equalizer in the last few minutes, Fighters found their last goal through the speed star, Sabiq. After getting the pass from Wasi, he crossed the defender and dodged the incoming goalkeeper, Kibria – who had no chance to stop the ball going to the net – a goal that “The Phenomenon” Ronaldo in his Inter Milan timeframe would have been proud of.
With this loss, Tigers are out of the tournament, but nevertheless, they showed a fighting spirit till the end of the game. Fighters will face Atletico Austin in their semi-final, arguably the best team in the tournament.
